Erin's Journey

Erin is a bright, mischievous young girl whose smile can light up any room. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at just 17 months old, she has navigated challenges with muscle tone, coordination, and balance from the very beginning. For Erin, everyday movements like sitting up, standing, or walking take extra effort and determination, but nothing dims her joyful spirit or endless curiosity.

From early on, her parents noticed delays in her motor milestones. Cerebral Palsy affects how the brain communicates with muscles, often causing increased or fluctuating tone that makes controlling movement harder. Yet even as a toddler, Erin’s resilience shone through. She refused to be held back, always eager to explore the world around her.

Seeking more ways to support her development, Erin's parents, Cherie and Stuart, brought her to Cortex Physiotherapy.

"We came to get support for Erin and to learn new ways in which to help her progress,"

Cherie explains.

While Erin had received NHS physiotherapy, her family felt it didn't have the facilities to push her as far as they hoped. A previous week-long intensive treatment from another specialist had been helpful but involved too much travel.

Right from the beginning, the focus was clear: help Erin build strength and stability, while equipping her parents with practical tools for home.

"For Erin to become stronger, for us as her parents to learn how best to help her"

Cherie recalls of their goals.

Erin wears bilateral ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs), custom braces that keep her ankles and feet aligned, giving her the stability she needs to practice standing and walking. With consistent work, she’s now spending much longer on her feet, her core and posture are stronger, sit-to-stand transitions are smoother, and she’s making exciting progress with weight shifting, important building blocks toward her goals.

What makes Erin’s sessions so special is her personality. She arrives full of energy, tackles every exercise with gusto, and often keeps everyone laughing with her cheeky antics. Once she’s standing... she’s off, ready to investigate whatever catches her eye! One Easter session stands out: practitioner Iain popped on bunny ears to entertain her, and Erin beamed her biggest smile yet as they worked together.

"Erin has loved every session and always puts her all into it,"

Cherie says proudly.

"We feel we have gained useful information, and we can definitely see changes in Erin and how she is progressing."

At home, Erin’s incredible family team, Mum Cherie, Dad Stuart, twin Sister Arya, and loving grandparents, keep the momentum going every day. They practice exercises, cheer every tiny victory, and fill her world with encouragement and fun.

A truly tear-jerking compilation of Erin's progress sent to us by her mum Cherie!

Erin’s progress is about so much more than physical steps. It’s about her growing belief in herself, her infectious laughter, and the sheer delight she takes in discovering what her body can do.

When asked what advice she’d give other families in a similar situation, Cherie doesn’t hesitate:

"Invest in a private physiotherapist, specifically Cortex Physiotherapy."

Erin’s story is still unfolding, full of promise and adventure. With her boundless determination, loving family, and that unforgettable sparkle, there’s no limit to where her courage will take her next.
