Karen’s Journey

Karen's first assisted walk outdoors in over 18 months

In early 2023, Karen’s life changed almost overnight. While staying in Poole, Dorset, she became seriously unwell suffering from a brain injury she was unaware she had developed that left her hospitalised for five months. When she was finally discharged, she was unable to even maintain her own sitting balance, something most of us take for granted.

Karen had developed a condition called hepatic encephalopathy, which occurs when the processing organs are unable to remove toxins from the blood properly. These toxins can then affect the brain, leading to symptoms such as confusion, reduced alertness, problems with balance and coordination, weakness, and in severe cases, like Karen's changes in movement and control. For Karen, this meant not only a long hospital stay, but a huge impact on her physical and neurological function.

Once fiercely independent, Karen suddenly found herself reliant on a full package of care, involving four daily double-handling visits and an additional night visit. Everyday tasks became impossible without help. The future felt uncertain, but if there’s one thing Karen is known for, it’s her grit.

“All I wanted was my independence back.”

Determined to give her the best chance of recovery and be closer to her support network, Karen’s family moved her to Scotland in 2024. That same year, she began working with Cortex Physiotherapy, and from the very first sessions it was clear she wasn’t prepared to accept limits on her recovery.

When we first started working with Karen, even standing felt unsafe. Walking outdoors was something she hadn’t done in well over a year. Step by step, we worked on rebuilding her foundations, sitting balance, standing tolerance, gait re-education, endurance, and upper-limb rehabilitation to regain control of her left arm. The sessions weren’t easy, but Karen never shied away from the challenge.

Since May 2024, her progress has been nothing short of remarkable. Karen went from needing full assistance to walking independently, returning to her beloved garden, and even driving again, milestones that once felt completely out of reach.

“It means the world to me to have my life back, especially after being told time and time again that I would never walk again. Well, I think I’ve proven them wrong.”

Karen finally getting back to what she loves.

Her rehab wasn’t just about walking. It was about confidence, identity, and reclaiming everyday life.

“My rehab with Cortex Physiotherapy hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth every minute. While they put you through your paces, they do so very compassionately. I can tell they truly care about me and my recovery.”

Alongside her physical improvements, Karen’s care package was gradually reduced as her independence grew. By April 2025, it was discontinued entirely, a huge milestone that marked her transition back to living life on her own terms.

And then came the real highlight, getting back into her garden.

After more than 18 months, Karen completed her first assisted outdoor walk, and not long after that she was strimming her own lawn with a smile on her face.

“This means everything to me,”

Karen said.

“It’s just nice to be myself again.”

Today, Karen continues to build on her recovery, doing the things she loves and living with the independence she worked so hard to earn. She hopes her journey can give hope to others facing similar challenges.

“Don’t give up, and don’t let the negative comments get you down. I never thought I’d be back on my feet, but with the right people by your side and the right rehab, recovery is possible.”

From hospital bed to garden shed, Karen’s comeback is proof that with the right support, specialist rehabilitation, and a whole lot of determination, even the biggest obstacles can be overcome.
