Karen’s Comeback Story
In early 2023, Karen’s life changed overnight. While staying in Poole, Dorset, she suffered an acquired brain injury that left her hospitalised for four months and, on discharge, unable to maintain her own sitting balance.
Once fiercely independent, Karen suddenly found herself reliant on a package of care involving five daily double-handling visits. The future looked uncertain. But if there's one thing Karen is known for, it’s her grit.
“All I wanted was my independence back,” she said.
Determined to give her the best chance of recovery, and to be closer to her support network, Karen’s family moved her to Scotland in 2024. That same year, she began working with Cortex Physiotherapy. And the transformation since has been nothing short of remarkable.
Karen went from needing full assistance to walking unaided, returning to her beloved garden, and even driving again, things that once felt out of reach.
“It means the world to me to have my life back, especially after being told time and time again that I would never walk again. Well, I think I’ve proven them wrong.”
Since May 2024, Karen has been working on balance training, gait re-education, endurance, and upper limb rehab to regain more control in her left arm. Her sessions haven’t always been easy — but her persistence never wavered.
Here is a video that captured Karen walking outside for the first time in almost two years using just a single stick, a moment that felt symbolic of how far she’s come.
“My rehab with Cortex Physiotherapy hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth every minute. While they put you through your paces, they do so very compassionately. I can tell they truly care about me and my recovery.”
Alongside her physical gains, Karen’s care package was gradually reduced and in April of 2025 it was discontinued entirely.
And then came the real highlight: getting back into her garden and doing what she loves.
“This means everything to me,” Karen said while strimming her lawn with a smile. “It’s just nice to be myself again.”
Karen hopes her story inspires others who are facing similar challenges.
“Don’t give up, and don’t let the negative comments get you down. I never thought I’d be back on my feet, but with the right people by your side and the right rehab, recovery is possible.”
From hospital bed to garden shed, Karen’s comeback is proof that with the right support and a whole lot of determination, even the biggest obstacles can be overcome.
