Stephen’s Journey

When Stephen suffered a stroke in early 2020, his life changed overnight. The stroke significantly affected the function of his left arm and leg, leaving everyday movement harder than it had ever been before. Determined to recover, Stephen spent two months in Redburn Rehabilitation Unit in Irvine before continuing with NHS physiotherapy after discharge.

For a while, progress came steadily. But eventually, Stephen was told he had reached his “full potential” and his therapy was discontinued. For Stephen, that didn’t sit right.

Rather than accepting that recovery had finished, he believed there was more still inside him. He felt he hadn’t been given the chance to truly show what he was capable of, and instead of slowing down, he pushed harder.

Fitness became a huge part of Stephen’s comeback. He joined the gym and began working relentlessly with a personal trainer, determined to fight back. Week after week, Stephen throws himself into challenging sessions, exercises he once wouldn’t have believed possible are now part of his routine. The work is tough, but his drive never fades.

In his search for further physiotherapy support, Stephen came across Cortex Physiotherapy.

“Iain contacted me through Facebook after a post I had made looking for a physiotherapy team that would work with someone who has had a stroke,”

Stephen explains.

From the very first session, Stephen was all in. He wasn’t nervous. He was focused.

“Stephen is an open book,”

the Cortex team say.

“He comes in determined to make the absolute most of every session and really give it his all.”

Stephen’s goals were clear, regain more movement in his left arm and leg, improve his walking and endurance, and rebuild his left-hand function, especially for gaming, which is something he’s passionate about.

Since beginning rehabilitation with Cortex, Stephen has pushed his limits every week. His physiotherapist, Dionne, challenges him beyond what he thought was possible, and Stephen rises to it every time.

“Dionne pushes me to my limits and beyond, and I feel like I’m seeing progress after each session,”

Stephen says.

The changes speak for themselves. Stephen’s walking has improved dramatically. His mobility has come on in leaps and bounds, fatigue has reduced, and he’s beginning to see real improvements in his left arm and hand control, proof that progress doesn’t stop just because time has passed since a stroke.

Like most people, Stephen doesn’t love exercises, but that doesn’t stop him.

“He might curse us after sessions,”

the team laugh,

“but he never stops working. He gives everything, every time.”

What makes Stephen’s journey powerful is his refusal to accept limits. Between Cortex sessions and relentless gym work with his personal trainer, Stephen continues to rebuild strength, confidence and belief in his body.

Stephen’s advice to others living with stroke recovery is simple:

“Get in touch with Cortex, they will find your true potential.”

Stephen’s story proves that recovery doesn’t end when traditional services stop. With the right mindset, the right support, and a willingness to work, progress is always possible. And Stephen is living proof of that.
